Block of 6 shops with flats and offices over; with attached
verandah. c1880-90, altered. Red brick in stretcher bond, with
some red tile-hanging and sandstone dressings. Free Neo-Tudor
style. Rectangular block containing 6 units at right-angles to
street.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys; 5-and-a-half bays, the 5 full bays
symmetrical, with a 3-bay centre under a triplet of jettied
gables, flanked by wider bays with pilasters and altered
gables. At ground floor the fifth bay (Nos 451 & 453) has a
symmetrical Art Deco shop front of bronze and plate glass,
with a black marble plinth, a rectangular bronze border with
Vitruvian scroll decoration, a recessed door with an oval
plate-glass window and bronze facing to the lower half with 3
bronze handles curved across the window.
Plain rectangular plate-glass display windows either side, a
plain bronze rail over doorway and windows, and a deep
tripartite overlight with small leaded panes. The first floor
has wooden mullion-and-transom oriels alternately rectangular
and canted, all with tile-hung aprons and 2 arched glazing
bars in the upper lights. At second floor the 3-bay centre has
rectangular wooden oriels on brackets, and above these the
triple jettied gables, also on brackets, with tile-hanging
which includes fishscale bands, one cross-window each and
dentilled bargeboards with finials. At the same levels the
outer bays have 2 cross-windows on each floor, those at second

carved tympani and those at third floor coupled and flanked by
banded pilasters. The half-bay to the right has a similar
window at first floor, but with an enriched cornice, and a
second-floor window like those adjoining.
The attached verandah, of 6 bays, has short cast-iron columns
with decorated pedestals and large Composite caps, plain
stilts with large foliated brackets, pierced friezes and a
curved glass roof (except the sixth bay where the brackets and
frieze are missing and the roof is now single-pitched).
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Forms group with Nos 423-431 to the left (qv) and with
verandah attached to Nos 459-467 adjoining to the right (qv);
the verandah is part of the series which characterizes this
street.
