GV II

Villa, now rest home. c1870; altered and enlarged. Red brick
in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and hipped slate
roof. Italianate style. Irregular plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys over cellar; 1:3 unequal bays (the first
being a later addition). Rectangular turret over the third
bay. Chamfered stone plinth, swept lead-clad canopy over
ground floor on slender curved wooden brackets, first-floor
sill band and prominent bracketed eaves (carried round the
canted third bay to form a balcony in front of the turret).
All openings are round-headed, with brick-pilastered surrounds
which have stone imposts and vermiculated keystones; the
centre has a wide doorway (up steps) with C20 glazed double
doors and altered fanlight. First floor has a 1/1 sash. The
left bay has a rectangular bay window at ground floor with 3
1/1 sashes; 3 similar sashes above.
The right-hand bay is canted to full height and has 3 1/1
sashes on both main floors; the turret above has a mansard
roof with finials, and a single-light casement window with a
wooden balustraded balcony which has a hipped roof, also with
a finial. Attached at the left end of the front is a canted
bay of 2 slightly lower storeys, in matching style.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Forms a group with No.39 to the right (which is the same
design in reflected reversal), and with No.37 (qv) and No.45
(qv).
