SOUTHPORT
SD31NW PORTLAND STREET
664-1/1/145 (North East side)
No.57A
II
House. Built as Southport's first railway terminal building;
now club premises. 1848, for the Liverpool, Crosby and
Southport Railway Company. Brown brick in Flemish bond, slate
roof. Single-depth double-fronted plan very close to railway
track.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 2-window range. Almost symmetrical:
narrow Tudor-arched doorway with 4-panel door and plain
fanlight; small 2/2 sash to left, coupled 2/2 sashes to the
right and 2 small square 2/2 sashes at first floor, all these
windows with raised sills and flat-arched heads, and all these
openings with chamfered brick surrounds. In the centre of the
first floor is a large square raised stone plaque with moulded
surround, now painted white but probably formerly lettered.
Oversailing verges to roof with restored wavy bargeboards,
pierced by tall extruded gable chimneys. Small single-storey
wing to left with boarded opening to front and small doorway
in left gable.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Interesting survival of very simple railway architecture, and
one of only 2 on this line (the other, No.49A Duke Street, has
been altered and is not included).
