Lifeboat Monument opposite
Scarisbrick Avenue

Monumental obelisk. Commemorates the loss of the lifeboat
"Eliza Fernley" with 14 crew in 1886; the commissioning of the
lifeboat "Edith and Annie" in 1888; the achievements of 2
other former lifeboats; and the public holiday celebrating the
majority of the Corporation of this borough and the jubilee of
Queen Victoria. Erected 28 June 1888. Grey granite.
Base of 3 square steps, plinth with corner colonettes and
bronze plaques, obelisk with chamfered corners. The plaque on
the south side is blank but the others are lettered, that on
the north side recording the loss of the "Eliza Fernley" while
attempting the rescue of the crew of the German barque
"Mexico" during a storm on 9 December 1886 (also commemorated
by Eliza Fernley monument in cemetery, Duke Street, qv).
