Church of St John
II
Church. 1890 enlarged 1903-9. By Paley and Austin. Common
brick in English garden wall bond (5 plus one courses), with
dressings of glazed red brick, red terracotta and some
timber-framing; bellcote-spire clad with green slates.
STYLE: Arts-and-Crafts with Perpendicular details.
PLAN: nave with north and south aisles embracing double north
and south transepts, chancel with parallel south chapel, north
vestry.
EXTERIOR: the south side has a timber-framed gabled porch to
the first bay of the aisle, a square 3-light window to the
right of this, then the large coupled transepts, each with a
central buttress with off-sets flanked by tall 3-stage 2-light
windows which have Tudor-arched lights, traceried heads and
hoodmoulds; the exposed left side of the west transept and the
apexes of both gables have timber studwork.
The chapel at the east end has a square 3-light window. At the
west end the nave has prominent buttresses with off-sets and a
wide segmental-headed 6-light west window with chamfered brick
surround, terracotta mullions and Perpendicular tracery in the
head; and on the roof a slated bellcote with wooden traceried
2-light windows and a broached spire with slender metal
finial.
The chancel has a large 2-centred arched east window of 1:3:1
lights in similar style to the west window.
INTERIOR: exposed brick; 4-bay arcades of 2-centred arches on
chamfered columns without capitals.
