Church. 1884-7, by RF Tolson. Rock-faced yellow sandstone,
slate roofs.
STYLE: C13
PLAN: nave with south-west porch-tower, north and south
aisles, south baptistery, coupled north and south transepts,
south vestry, chancel.
EXTERIOR: the 4-stage tower, with angle buttresses (foundation
stone dated 1884 between those to left), has a 2-centred
arched south doorway moulded in 3 orders, with an A-shaped
coping above; a heavy moulded band to the second stage, which
has lancet arcading with shafts; a pilaster strip to the third
stage flanked by a pair of narrow slots; another heavy moulded
band to the belfry stage, which has pairs of deeply-moulded
lancet windows with stone louvres and gablets; balustraded
parapet with pyramidal corner pinnacles.
The nave has a tripartite west window of 1:3:1 lights, with
Geometric tracery to the centre. 5-bay clerestory with
pilaster strips and pairs of 2-light windows with Y-tracery.
The low buttressed aisles have pairs of cusped one-light
windows; the coupled gables of the transepts have 4-light
windows with Geometric tracery.
In the west angle with the south transept (the third bay of
the south aisle) is a gabled baptistery which has a window of
3 arched lights in each wall; in the east angle is a vestry
parallel with the chancel.
The tall chancel has a 5-light east window with Geometric
tracery.
INTERIOR: 5-bay aisle arcades of cylindrical columns with
moulded annular caps carrying 2-centred arches with ovolo
moulding; wrought-iron circular lamps suspended between bays;
2-centred vaulted ceiling with lateral beams supporting posts
to the ridge; marble and alabaster pulpit; early C20 oak choir
stalls by GC Packer, with gableted and traceried canopies, and
similar organ case on north side.
Baptistery with Romanesque-style colonnading, communication
with chapel in south transept. Various commemorative stained
glass windows.
