Former St Stephen's Schools

II

School, now offices. 1855, for Fr. George Wagner and enlarged
in 1895, according to an inscription at first-floor level.
Knapped flint with stone dressings, roof of slate.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 4-window range. Gothic in style. The
front is symmetrical but steps down with the slope of the
street. Pointed-arched entrance to north with elaborate strap
hinges, the south entrance now a window. A sloped band of
dressed stone runs from the lower part of the north entrance
to a similar point on the south, while another band, flush
with the wall, runs from just below the springing of the north
entrance to just below the apex of the south; a tall, shallow
niche in dressed stone divides the 2 halves of the building at
ground-floor level. Principal windows flat-arched with
hoodmoulds, the glazing divided by a broad flat mullion and
moulded transom, both in wood; smaller windows above the
entrances; these ground-floor windows have iron window-guards,
presumably of 1895; moulded string between storeys; the upper
windows follow the pattern of the principal ground-floor
windows; moulded parapet; hipped roof.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
