St Joseph's Convent of Mercy

II

House, now nunnery for St Joseph's Convent of Mercy. Early
C19. Stucco and brick in Flemish bond. Roof obscured by
parapet.
2 storeys over basement. 6-window range, 2-window range on
left return. The ground floor has banded rustication and a
storey band in stucco. The first floor is of brown brick, with
window lintels of gauged brick. Ranges 2-4 project slightly;
flat-arched entry with overlight in the second-window range.
All the windows are flat arched, some with sashes of original
design: 3 x 6 to windows in first-, third- and 4th-window
ranges as well as first- and second-window ranges of first
floor; 6 x 6 sashes to second- and 4th-window range of first
floor. One window on the ground floor of the return is
blocked. On the ground floor, near the right-hand corner, is a
single-storey canted bay with tripartite windows, coved
cornice and crenellated parapet. Brick entablature and dentil
cornice to first floor are topped by a stucco parapet. Stacks
to end walls and between fourth- and fifth-window ranges.
