House. c1825. Probably designed by Amon Wilds and Charles
Augustin Busby. Mathematical tiles, painted; mansard roof of
slate. Cast-iron shop front of late C19.
EXTERIOR: main elevation on Old Steine. 4 storeys and dormers
over basement. 2-window range with a 3-window range return. At
the corner the shop front is framed by elements cast in a
Gothic Revival style, all bays but entrance with tracery
spandrels; on the return the shop front has rusticated piers
with waterleaf capitals. A flat-arched entrance on the corner
and on the return. The principal elevation treated as a
full-height and nearly full-width segmental bay. All windows
are flat arched; floor-to-ceiling first-floor windows open out
onto a shallow balcony enclosed by cast-iron railings in an
anthemion and heart motif; third-floor windows with projecting
sills. Storey bands between first and second floors level with
sills of second-floor windows; this band continues across the
return. The roof parapet is balustraded to the main elevation
only. On the return 2 third-floor windows are blocked; the
third filled with a late C19 or early C20 canted bay. Many
sashes of original design: 6 x 6 to first floor, 3 x 6 to
second, and 3 x 3 to third; on return: 6-pane top sashes to
first-floor windows only. Stacks to return and party walls.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Nos 1 and 1A and Nos 2-7 (qv) Castle Square form a group.
