21-JAN-00 Fort Cottages
II
Cottages, probably originally coastguard cottages. Built after 1824 but shown on the 1838 map of Broadstairs. Rendered with gable ends with kneelers and roof now covered in C20 concrete plain tiles and one central and two end brick chimneystacks. Two storeys. East side has windows, alternately cambered sashes and sliding sashes and pedimented doorcases. West elevation has 8 cambered sashes and pedimented doorcases. The plan form is very unusual as there were originally eight separate dwellingunits accessed by four doors leading to a lobby off which are two separate "front" doors, one leading to a downstairs unit and one to a staircase leading to an upstairs unit. There are internal ledged doors to the lobby with hand maded strap hinges and original fireplaces and plank panelling.
