Chest tomb. c1860. Granite and limestone with decorative cast-iron railings. mounted on the curbing enclosing the plot. The granite tomb has inscriptions to Lt.-Gen. Sir Harry Smith, died 1860 , and his wife Juana, died 1872. The base is inscribed with the many battles in which Sir Harry fought. Side has large bronze plaque with the words spoken by the Duke of Wellington in the House of Lords, probably at the time of the Thanks of Parliament given to Sir Harry on his victory at Aliwal 1846. He became Governor of Cape Colony in 1847 and the towns of Harrismith and Ladysmith are named after the pair. The tomb stands east north east of the cemetery chapel (qv).
