East of Norden Farmhouse

Bank barn. Circa 1830s or 1840s. Local grey limestone rubble. Grouted scantle slate roof with gabled ends, one end with stone coping.
PLAN: Rectangular on plan; built into bank at rear, with shippons and root store on ground floor and barn above entered at rear where the ground level is higher.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. South front has shippon doorways with plank doors and wider central doorway with cambered arch [partly blocked] on ground floor, and central door above with canopy; ventilation slits on ground and first floors. At rear [N] large central doorway to barn with plank double doors; C20 open-sided shelter against rear wall.
INTERIOR: Shipons on ground floor have large roughly-hewn and closely-spaced joists; root store converted into dairy. Barn above has 8-bay roof, collar trusses, the collars halved, lapped and pegged to the principals, two tiers of purlins set on the backs of the principals; common-rafters intact with ridgeboard; underside of slates torched.
