in the grounds of The Rectory
GV II
Garden wall and attached summer house. Wall C17; summerhouse circa 1700 for Mr Christie. Wall of dark red brick, approx 16 courses high and 15 metres in length, with a shaped stone coping and a swept curve later incorporated into the summer house side wall. Summer house of red brick in Flemish bond with blue headers under plain tile roof with lead hips. The building is square on plan, raised on a shallow brick arch. Entrance by four steps on the E side; sash windows (now boarded over). Pyramidal roof with exposed shaped rafter ends on timber wall plates, and with a metal decorative terminal. Interior not inspected. History: Built probably before 1703 by Mr Christie, then incorporated in the extensive gardens of his property, the Old Vicarage (now no. 79, Old Chantry House (qv)). A will of 1703 describes, " ... and also a very neat Kitchen and Pleasure garden, laid out in a tasteful Manner, walled around and planted with the choicest Fruit Trees, Evergreens and shrubs and other ornamental Trees and flowers, with a complete raised Brick Summer house, and chimney thereon, neatly sashed and fitted up, and a Temple of Ease in the said Garden, the whole containing 2r 20p." The summer house is said to have been used at one time as a smoke house.
