Educational institute. 1878, by C Isaac Newey, with early C20 addition and later C20 alterations. Front range, red brick, with ashlar and moulded brick dressings and plain tile roofs. Gothic Revival style. Plinth, moulded string courses and eaves detail. 2 storeys; 3 window range.
Setback central porch, 2 storeys, has a moulded pointed arched doorway under a coped gable, with original panelled double doors and leaded glazed fanlight. To left, pointed arched recess with hood mould, containing datestone. Above, a pointed arched opening with hood mould, containing a plain sash. Right return has similar sashes on each floor. To left, a projecting bay with a canted bay window under a slate roof, with original plain sashes in shouldered openings. Above, a through-eaves dormer with traceried bargeboard, with 2 similar sashed in a segment arched opening with hood mould. Late C20 gable, replacing original pyramidal roof. To right a setback bay window, 2 storeys, with gable and traceried bargeboard. 2 plain sashes with shouldered heads, set in a segment arched opening with hood mould. Each return has a similar single window. Above, a triple lancet opening with linked hood moulds and plain sashes. Similar single sashes to each return.
To right, early C20 addition, red brick, single storey, with coped gable and segment arched carriage opening with double doors. Felted roof and blank right return, rendered. This addition covers 7 original openings, 4 now blocked.
Service rooms, meeting room and lecture hall, at rear, red brick with slate roofs, are masked by early C20 addition. Large gabled block containing meeting room and lecture hall has rooflights and ventilators, and central double doors. At the rear, a gabled projection with a smaller lean-to addition.
INTERIOR:
Front range has hallway with pointed arches, cornice, and Gothic doorcases, leading to dogleg principal staircase with turned balusters, square newels and moulded handrail. Principal rooms have cornices and renewed fireplaces: segment arched kitchen fireplace may be original. First floor rooms also have cornices, and one has an exposed roof truss on corbels. Meeting room has matchboard dado, pointed arched blind arcading with impost band, and exposed roof trusses on corbels, linked by tie rods. Blocked pointed arched opening with sliding doors to lecture hall, and altered double doors into service range. Lecture hall has similar blind arcading with enriched tympana, friezes of cherubs, and similar roof structure with wall shafts to corbels. Doorway with Gothic surround to side passage. Segmental pointed proscenium arch and stage with panelled front and inserted panelled enclosure to steps into space beneath. Under the stage, a cellar with segment arched brick arcades.
