Originally a pair of semi-detached houses known as Cavendish
Mansions, filling the end of Cavendish Place; now a hotel.
c1829. Stucco, roof obscured by parapet.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys over basement, 3-window range to each
house in Cavendish Place. Ground floor decorated with banded
rustication; entrance to former No.8 in 2-storey bow set back
to left: flat-arched porch entrance flanked by round-arched
windows with margin lights; curved doorcase behind that with
side- and overlights with decorative glazing; cornice; first
floor has 3 flat-arched tripartite windows with sashes of
original design; dentil cornice and blocking course. The
Cavendish Place front has round-arched ground-floor windows
set back in a round-arched panel of stucco; storey band; all
upper windows flat-arched; those to first floor with
architraves, pediment and individual balconies with cast-iron
railings; second-floor windows have architraves; dentil
cornice; attic storey; sashes of original design throughout;
secondary cornice and blocking course; stack to party wall.
Single-storey wings to east and west, that to the east
replacing the original porch in part, and detailed in keeping
with the main building.
INTERIOR: curved, open-well, cantilevered staircases to the
ground, first and second floors, at the west and east ends of
the building, with curtail step, wrought-iron balusters,
wreathed mahogany handrails and open, decorated string, that
to the east altered by having a lift inserted in the well.
Original, panelled, rectilinear architraves to many doors,
including sets of 3 curved architraves on the half-landings;
the westernmost room on the first floor, though now
partitioned, retains a pedimented doorcase, and an elaborately
moulded cornice decorated with anthemion ornament in part.
Cast-iron area railings with ornate finials.
