Terraced houses. c1855. Stucco. Roof obscured by blocking
course.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys over half basement. 3 windows each. All
units originally conformed to a common type, a description of
which follows. Elevation treated as full-height and nearly
full-width segmental bay with a flat-arched entrance with
overlight framed by a Tuscan aedicule to the right party wall.
To the left 2 windows. All windows flat arched with projecting
sills. Entablature band with projecting cornice below the
blocking course. Nos 2, 3 and 6 have banded rustication to the
ground floor. Floor-to-ceiling windows open onto a first-floor
balcony enclosed by cast-iron railings and supported by
cast-iron brackets. First- and second-floor windows to Nos 2,
3, and 6 have architraves; each first-floor window of No.2 has
a floating cornice; first-floor windows of Nos 3 and 6 each
have an entablature with a cornice supported by a pair of
console brackets. The third-floor windows of No.2 have
architraves. Elevation of No.1 has an extra window range to
the right of the bay, in which is set a flat-arched entrance
with sidelights to door and overlight; this is framed by
Tuscan aedicule comparable to but wider than those found on
Nos 2, 3, and 6; in addition centre window in bay to third
floor is blocked, and there is a storey band between the
second and third floors. All have 2 x 2 sashes of original
design to second and third floors. Stacks to party walls.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Railings to stairs and areas of all but Nos 4 and 5. The
terrace has undergone so many alterations, particularly to Nos
4 & 5, that it is now hard to find a unit which has all the
original features. The street was originally called Lyall
Place.
