Synagogue. c1825. Built as synagogue, along with Nos 38 & 39
(qv), and enlarged to include residence and schoolroom in 1837
by David Mocatta; restoration currently underway, including
the rebuilding of first-floor verandah. Stucco. Roof obscured
by parapet.
3 storeys over basement. 3-window range. Flat-arched entrance
with overlight; 2 flat-arched windows with projecting sills to
the right. Ground floor has chamfered rustication. First-floor
balcony with cast-iron railings in Gothic Revival style:
intersecting ogee arches with quatrefoil borders. Storey band
between first and second floors. All sashes of original
design; some original glazing survives in ground floor and 2
basement windows, the latter being camber arched, which have
deep reveals. Cornice and parapet. Stacks to party walls.
INTERIOR: not inspected. Railings to stairs and area. The
synagogue was built to accommodate 50 people.
