TQ3103NE GRAFTON STREET 577-1/47/297 (West side) 20/08/71 No.14


Terraced house. Early C19. Attributed by the late Arthur Bolton to Charles Barry. Stucco with brick painted and laid in Flemish bond on the first and second floors. Roof of right half of slate turnerised, that of the left obscured by parapet. EXTERIOR: left side 4 storeys over basement. right 3 storeys and dormers over basement. Elevation designed in 2 distinct halves, the left with a 2-window range and the right with a 3-window range; marking the party walls and dividing the elevation in 2 are 3 rusticated pilaster strips which rise from the ground floor to the cornice which has modillion brackets. Flat-arched entry set in the left half is framed by Tuscan pilasters. A conventional entablature above this is broken by a vermiculated keystone in the frieze. To either side of the entry aedicule are pilaster strips made from vermiculated blocks. To the right of the entry is a large flat-arched window with wood glazing bars set in the pattern of a Venetian window. There are storey bands between the ground and first, and first and second floors, the latter topped by a parapet coming to the sills of the windows which are taller than the rest. All the windows are flat arched, those on the first through third floors have architraves; the second floor windows have cornices in addition. The right half of the elevation is treated as a full-height and full-width segmental bay. The ground floor is treated as a rusticated arcade of 3 bays. Each round arch is subordered and has a keystone. In each bay is a round-arched window. Balcony enclosed by parapets and railings to first floor; this is supported by large modillion brackets. First floor windows are flat-arched and have architraves and cornices; second floor windows have architraves only. The cornice above the right half is continuous with that of the left and of the same design. One flat-arched dormer. Stacks to party walls. In 1901 alterations, the ground floor of No.58 Marine Parade (qv) was extended into the ground floor of this unit. INTERIOR: not inspected.
