Terraced houses. 1827. By Amon Henry Wilds. Stucco, roofs of
tile to Nos 1-2 and 14-16, slate to Nos 7, 11 and 13, the rest
obscured by parapet.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys over basement except Nos 7, 11 and 13-16
which are of 3 storeys, dormers to Nos 1-3, 7, 11 and 13-16;
3-window range. The terrace is roughly symmetrical, with
ranges of matching design either side of a centrepiece. The
common features of all the houses are: ground floor decorated
with banded rustication; round-arched entrance with fanlight;
2 round-arched windows to ground floor with springing band and
blank balustrade to apron; continuous balcony to first floor
with cast-iron railings; all windows above ground floor
flat-arched; entablature over second-floor windows; attic
storey or dormers in mansard roof; stacks to party walls;
cast-iron railings to steps and area with conical finials.
The features which distinguish the different ranges are: the
centrepiece: Nos 8-10, nine-window range, giant fluted
pilasters with ammonite capitals to first and second floors,
storey band between those floors, plain pilasters between
attic windows, stepped and panelled pediment over 5 central
windows; then Nos 7 and 11, 3-window range and no pilasters,
storey band between first and second floors; then Nos 6 and
12, 3-window range, giant fluted pilasters with ammonite
capitals to first and second floors, storey band between those
floors, entablature and pediment, plain pilasters between
attic windows, cornice and blocking course; then 2 windows of
No.3, Nos 4-5 (eight-window range) and Nos 13-15 and 2 windows
of No.16 (eleven-window range), round-arched architraves over
first-floor windows with shell moulds in the tympana;
entablature and blocking course, Nos 3-5 having attic storey,
Nos 13-16 dormers; then Nos 1-2 and one window of No.3, and
one window of No.16 and Nos 17-18, 7-window range, fluted
giant pilasters with ammonite capitals to first and second
floors, storey band between those floors, entablature,
pediment over central windows, attic storey with pilasters
between windows.
Features of interest on individual houses are: Nos 1-3,
panelled doors of original design; No.2, pediment interrupted
by third-floor window; No.4, sashes of original design to
first and second floors; No.5, sashes of original design to
first floor and individual cast-iron balconies; No.7, panelled
door of original design, decorative glazing to fanlight and
sashes of original design to first floor; No.8, panelled door
of original design, sashes of original design to first, second
and third floors; No.10, panelled door of original design and
sashes of original design to ground, second and third floors;
No.11, sashes of original design to second floor; No.12,
sashes of original design to first, second and third floors;
No.17, panelled door of original design. No 18 has return in
Sillwood Place: 5-window range; central round-arched entrance
with fanlight and panelled door of original design;
round-arched windows to ground floor, flat-arched above, and
flanked by giant Doric pilasters apart from return of fluted
ammonite column at corner; entablature; pilasters to attic
storey; several windows blind.
