piers and railings
GV II
Gate spanning the debouchment of South Avenue into Park
Street. Dated 1890. Designed by the Borough Engineer and
Surveyor, Francis J May. Artificial stone.
Gate of 3 bays with centre, the highest and widest of the
openings, treated as a triumphal arch; flat-arched opening in
lower wall to either side. Centre round-arched opening with
continuous architrave interrupted by large volute keystone and
coved springing band, the latter continuing across the side
walls; arch piers are rectangular in section. Each spandrel on
both faces and the corresponding wall on shallow returns have
a roundel which bears a lion's head cast in high relief. There
is a projecting dentil cornice topped by a low attic storey
bearing an inscription: "Gift of the Trustees of Brighton Race
Stand. Alderman Henry Abbey. Alderman John L. Brigden, J.P.
Alderman Ridley J.P. and William Seymour Burrows Esquire. To
the Inhabitants of Brighton. MDCCCXC", which is identical to
that on the gateway in Egremont Place (qv). Square cresting
flanked by volute brackets bears the words "Queen's Park";
pinnacle above. The roof of the attic, which is repeated on
the side walls, is treated as a ribbed coping which is
segmental in section. Side openings are flat arched with
architraves, plain panelled overdoor. Side walls terminate in
a pier, square in section; cap formed by segmental pediment on
each face with a ball finial on top. Low wall and cast-iron
railings link gate with piers at the corners with Park Hill
and Freshfield Place: wall with raised panel between 2 piers
to the former and single pier to the latter. The south and
north face of the gate are identical.
This gate forms a group with the former Royal Spa in Park Hill
(qv) and the gate to Egremont Place (qv).
