Brewery office, possibly originally a public house. Dated 1893
on a plaque over north-west entrance. Red brick in Flemish
bond with dressings of gauged brick and terracotta; roof of
slate.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 5 windows to principal, north front. The
facade has 3 sides treated continuously, in Phoenix Place to
the east and north and in Albion Street to the west, with
chamfered corners.
All openings round-arched with heads and keystones of gauged
red brick; principal entrance at north-west corner,
distinguished by having an architrave of moulded brick and an
acanthus keystone; spandrels decorated with Tamplin's Brewery
Company monogram, panel above with 1893 in a setting of
garlands and strapwork.
Ground floor divided into bays by blocked pilasters; panelled
plinth; terracotta sill-band continuous apart from entrances;
fascia with panel lettered 'PHOENIX BREWERY' on east front;
'FOUNDED 1821' in garlands and strapwork at the north-east
corner; 'TAMPLINS BREWERY COMPY LTD' on north front; date at
north-west corner; and 'PHOENIX BREWERY' on west front;
moulded terracotta cornice; first floor treated likewise with
blocked pilasters, round-arched windows, entablature and
terracotta cornice; pediment over 3 central windows on north
front with phoenix modelled in relief; hipped roof; corniced
stacks.
INTERIOR: original mahogany lobby at north-west entrance;
principal room to first floor has original architraves and
panelled doors of original design, plaster frieze of
arabesques, and decorative plaster ceiling.
