Terrace of 4, all with shops at ground floor level and accommodation above. Nos 136 & 137 is single late C17/early C18 house, reglazed in the C19. Nos 138 & 139 may also have early cores but may be early C19 with facades matching Nos 136 & 137. C20 shopfronts. Mass wall construction, stuccoed and blocked out. Slate roof to 136 and 137; roofs not visible at 138 and 139. Concealed rainwater goods.
Plan: the row steps down Fore Street Hill. Nos 136 & 137, the house at the lower end of the row, has a deep rectangular plan, altered at ground floor level for shop use but possibly with evidence of the early plan on the upper floors. Nos 138 and 139 each also have a deep rectangular plan with ground floor alterations for shop use. Exterior: Nos 136 and 137 are 3 storeys; Nos 138 and 139, uphill, are 4 storeys. Asymmetrical but regular 4:2:2-window front. Nos 136 and 137, the single historic house, is symmetrical above ground floor level and preserves a hipped slate roof behind the parapet which has a moulded cornice with a modillion frieze. Platbands at first and second floor level; sash windows glazed with probably early C19 recessed 12-pane hornless sashes in earlier embrasures. Ground floor has two C20 shop fronts with recessed entrance between. Nos 138 and 139 each have 2-window fronts and are 4 storeys high with similar parapets and platbands; C20 shop fronts to ground floor. 12-pane horned sashes at first and second floors. Each building has a central single 3/6 pane horned sash at third floor level. INTERIORS: No.136 retains a late C17 moulded plaster cornice at ground floor level. Interiors otherwise not inspected but Nos 135 & 137 are likely to include features of interest including original roof construction.
