GV II

Terraced houses, now shops, offices and flats. c1842. The row
was completed at the same time that Prince Albert Street was
cut through from Market Street to Black Lion Street. Stucco.
Roof obscured by parapet.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys over basement. One window each except for
No.8, the plan of which follows the corner with a 2-window
range to Prince Albert Street and the return with a curved
corner range between the 2.
The design of the terrace is so much in keeping with the
Regency pattern that, given the late date, it may be right to
call it "Regency Revival". In the late C20 the uniform
appearance of the group was underscored by the restoration of
shop fronts of an original design.
There is a segmental bay with tripartite windows to the first
and second floors of each unit. The tops of the bays stop just
short of the cornice which is continuous across the terrace.
All windows are flat arched, those to No.8 have projecting
sills. The bays have many sashes of original design: the
first-floor bay of Nos 3-8 have 6/6 sashes to the centre
windows and 4/4 to the sides.
The window range near the corner of No.8 is not filled by a
bay and has instead a single window with 8/8 sashes to each
upper floor; this unit's corner window has 4/4 and 2/4 sashes
to the first and second floors respectively.
The second-floor bays of Nos 4-8 have 6/6 sashes to the centre
windows and 4/4 sashes to the sides. Coming at the top of the
street and having 2 elevations, the design of No.8 differs
from the rest. There is a triple window to the first and
second floors of the first-window range on the return, the
pattern of each sash being 4/4; to each floor in the
second-window range there is a double window, each sash again
having 4/4 panes of original design; the stack is moulded and
placed in the outer plane of the corner range; another moulded
stack at the right party wall; the corner has a plain sign
panel. To the ground floor of No.8s return are 3 bays of a mid
to late C19, cast-iron arcade, now enclosed by C20 front; the
arcade spandrels are openwork in a floral pattern, the
capitals in a medieval style. Stacks to party walls of the
remaining units.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Nos 3-8 (consec) were listed on 13.10.52.
