No.15B
GV II
Shops. c1890s. Terracotta; return of brick in stretcher bond.
Roof obscured by parapet.
EXTERIOR: single storey. The front of No.15B presents the
original elevation. Each front was originally divided into 3
bays: 2 large display windows flank flat-arched entrance,
which is paved with mosaic tile. Glazing bars and transoms of
wood after an original design. Frieze of an entablature above
bears the shop name, and above this a continuous cornice. The
fronts are set within a terracotta armature of pilasters,
entablature and parapet. Each pilaster has recessed panels
decorated with strapwork. At the top a fluted bracket supports
a capital formed from egg-and-dart moulding. Dentil cornice
continuous across the fronts. Across the top of each shop a
balustrade interrupted by 2 panelled socles. Thicker socles
above each pilaster dividing the shops. This parapet returns
to No.15 Prince Albert Street (qv). The parapet and brick
return obscure the ground-floor corner quoining of No.15. A
distinguished design of its type and date, with strong group
value.
The shop numbered 15C, which is not included in this listing,
appears to be a late C20 reproduction in artificial stone of
the original design.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
