Terraced house. Early to mid C19, remodelled in 1908 for the
Sussex Dairy Company to designs by M Mellor, identified as a
surveyor, No.110 St James's Street, Brighton (qv). Pebbledash
and purplish brick, dark red brick dressings; glazed
terracotta shopfront.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys over basement, stepping down on return.
One-window range; 3- on left return. Corner entry through
early C20 shopfront of glazed terracotta panels which are
ornamented with floral and fretwork patterns. Another entry on
the return is camber arched with overlight, dressings of soft
red brick. Return in purplish brick, laid in English garden
wall bond. To the left of entrance are 2 camber-arched
windows, to the right one. To the first floor of main
elevation rectangular bay with lean-to metal roof, corners
treated as fluted Tuscan piers; sill band to second-floor
double, 6 x 6 sash window. On the first and second floors of
return are 2 early C20 signs in artificial stone, each treated
as rectangular panel, which, on the first floor bears a cow in
low relief flanked by 2 elliptical shields formed from
banners. Each shield has Tudor rose in relief in the centre
with the legend: on the left, "Established 1806," and on the
right: "Rebuilt 190[?obscured]." Panel to second floor bears
the legend: "Sussex Dairy Co. Ltd." Cornice and parapet in
artificial stone. Stacks to end and party walls. This sign
faces the Bristol Road Methodist Church, Montague Place (qv)
and forms a group with it on the irregular square formed by
the intersection of Bristol and St George's Roads with
Montague Place.
