02/11/54 the stables
GV II
Wellhouse. Of late C17 and C18 date, considerably restored. Of
timber construction, with lath and plaster walls now covered
with pebbledash on the south-east, south-west and north-west
sides, and smooth-rendered on the north-east. 3 bays with C19
braced king posts, the purlins all renewed; the building now
has 2 round arches to each of the south-east and north-east
sides and one to the north-west. Horizontal horsewheel under
the north-western truss, the iron gear wheels and belt
transmission dating from c1850; the horsewheel was brought
from elsewhere and the engine was originally powered by oxen.
Brick and cobbled paving with horse-track. The well itself is
now sealed.
