Garden temple. c1835. Designed by William Kendall, the
architect who laid out Madeira Drive and the Esplanade and who
also designed the Esplanade Cottages and Reading Room (qv).
Stucco. Roof obscured by parapet and C20 walkway.
PLAN: rectangular, set into embankment.
EXTERIOR: main elevation treated as a round-arched arcade of 3
bays with a return of one bay. Each pier is composite formed
from a plain pier with springing band for the arches to which
has been applied a Tuscan pilaster which supports an
entablature running just above the top of the arcade. End
walls treated as rusticated piers across which the dentil
cornice of the entablature runs.
Return of single bay to same design to the right.
Kemp Town constitutes a most important group and consists of
Arundel Terrace, Chichester Terrace, Lewes Crescent, Sussex
Square and related buildings.
Forms part of a group with the former Old Reading Room,
Esplanade Cottages and the tunnel entrance (qv).
