S & E-W wing attached to E UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX.
Physics building. 1960-62. Designed by Sir Basil Spence. Red
brick with bare, board-marked concrete. Timber frames to
windows. Flat roof. Courtyard plan with wing projecting to
east. Main facade, facing west into Fulten Court, of 3
storeys, 11 bays, treated as a 'giant order', with windows
recessed behind projecting brick buttresses topped by
projecting concrete cornice with segmental arches to
underside. Open arcade to ground floor with segmental arched
concrete lintels above; first floor windows also topped by
segmental arched concrete lintels.
Rear north-south wing, attached to the eastern projection, not
included in this listing.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
