No 86 and attached wall

(Formerly listed as No.86 National Westminster Bank and attached wall)

II

Bank. c1925. Portland stone, roof obscured by parapet.

EXTERIOR: single-storey, three-window range to Western Road, four-window range to Sillwood Road and to Little Preston Street. The building exploits the fact that it is, though narrow, bounded on three sides by streets; on each of these sides there is a three-bay arcade of Doric pilasters and entablature superimposed upon an arcade of Doric pilasters and round, rusticated arches; and there is a lower, one-window bay to the south. The middle bay on each front is a round-arched window; the two outer bays have a lintel at springing level, detailed with voussoirs and keystone, and a blank tympanum above. Flat-arched entrance in eastern bay on Western Road with glazed tympanum, and inner and outer double panelled doors of original design; north window in Little Preston Street blind; flat-arched windows in south bay with keystones; all windows have original metal glazing; entablature with dentil and mutule cornice; balustraded parapet.

INTERIOR: full-height banking hall with original panelled counter: bracketed pilasters between panels, supporting a frieze decorated with Vitruvian scrolls and bead-and-reel ornament.

Dwarf wall to corner with Sillwood Street.
