Villa, now 3 flats and attached railings. c1830 with later
additions and alterations including single-storey range to
rear. Reddish-brown brick with painted stucco facades with
Welsh slate roof and cast-iron verandah and railings.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attic to gable and 3 first-floor
windows. Entrance facade to gable end. Plinth. 6 roll-edged
steps to central entrance, double 6-panel doors between
pilaster strips with side-lights with glazing-bars with
elliptically-arched overlight with radial glazing bars, within
distyle Roman Doric porch with plain engaged pilasters,
frieze, architrave, cornice and blocking course.
Outer windows to ground and first floors are blind. Central
first-floor window a 6/6 sash. All in plain reveals with
tooled architraves and sills. Cornice continues around house.
Shaped gable with copings rising to double stacks and
containing pair of 6/6 sashes with continuous sill and plain
reveals.
Garden facade: centre projects slightly. Ground floor has
10-pane French windows with divided overlight within tooled
architraves. First floor has 6/6 sashes in plain reveals and
with tooled architraves, sills. Concealed openings to
basement.
Facade to Binswood Avenue: central entrance a part-glazed,
4-panel door in plain reveals and with tooled surround. Canted
bays to ground floor have 1/1 sashes with horns. First floor
has 6/6 sashes in plain reveals with sills and tooled
surrounds. Range to rear has tripartite window of 1/1 sashes,
otherwise C20 porch and window. To garden facade a continuous
verandah with paterae and anthemions to uprights.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: railings to sides of steps to gable-end
entrance and to area to left have open-lozenge finials.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Arlington Avenue, formerly Arlington Street,
was laid out in the 1820s.
Forms a group with Nos 50-60 (even) Binswood Avenue (qv).
