Terrace of 9 houses, some now with flats and attached
railings. c1828-1833 with later additions and alterations.
Probably by Samuel Edward Nicklin. Pinkish-brown brick in
English Garden Wall bond with stucco front facades to all
except No.15, Welsh slate roof and cast-iron railings and
verandahs, the latter with lead and asphalt roofs.
PLAN: double-depth with side entrances.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with basements and attic to No.19 to rear,
18 first-floor windows, 2 per house. The terrace is stepped
after Nos 5 and 15; Nos 7-15 are slightly recessed.
First floor has tall 6/9 sashes throughout in plain reveals.
Second floor: four 6/6 sashes then 3/6 sashes throughout, all
in plain reveals and with sills.
Ground floor: steps to end entrances are 4-panelled doors,
part-glazed to Nos 3, 5 and 17, all with tooled architraves
and elliptical overlights, mainly with decorative
glazing-bars, all in plain reveals and elliptically-arched
surrounds, No.19 also has elliptically-arched horizontal
rustication.
Windows: from left, two 8/8 sashes, otherwise 6/6 sashes with
margin-lights all in plain reveals and with sills, No.19 has
flat channelled arch with keystone; except to No.17 a canted
bay with plate-glass sashes. Basements: mainly 3/6 sashes with
margin-lights; 5/10 sash to No.5; panelled and part-glazed
doors. Frieze, cornice, blocking course and copings, except to
No.13. Tall end stacks throughout, mainly with cornices.
To rear: mainly 6/6 and 3/9 sashes with 9/12 staircases sashes
to most houses.
Continuous verandah to first floor to each range with
double-rod-and-anthemion motifs to balustrades and uprights,
on brackets. Bell-pulls and lion knockers to Nos 13, 15 and
17.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: railings to sides of steps and across
fronts have stylised fleur-de-lys finials.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Binswood Avenue was laid out c1828 and mostly
built by 1834.
Forms an architectural group with No.1 (qv).
