Includes: No.13 KENILWORTH ROAD.
2 houses, now house and offices. c1836 with later additions
and alterations. Probably built by Samuel Bird. Brick with
painted stucco facades and Welsh slate roof with cast-iron
verandahs.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with basement, 6 first-floor windows, 3 to
each house.
First floor: continuous band, 6/6 sashes in plain reveals with
sills and tooled architraves, those 3 to left have frieze and
cornice.
To right dwelling: frieze and cornice.
Second floor: 3/6 sashes in plain reveals with tooled
architraves and sills, those 3 to right have blind boxes.
Cornice to left, copings throughout.
Ground floor: 5 tall 6/9 sashes in plain reveals, those 2 to
left have tooled architraves, those 3 to right have blind
boxes.
Entrances: (No.45 Binswood Avenue) to left, steps to 3-panel
door with side-lights with cambered overlight with
glazing-bars; (No.13 Kenilworth Road) to right gable end,
steps to central entrance a 3-panel door with side-lights and
continuous overlight in plain reveals with tooled architrave.
Concealed basements. Tall end and centre stacks with cornices.
Ground floor has 2 continuous verandahs, one to each house,
with decorative balusters and barleytwist uprights and frieze.
Gable end to right has continuous first-floor band, frieze and
cornice, with 3/6 sash in plain reveals to gable.
To rear: 6/6, 3/6, 2/2 sashes, with 6/6 staircase sash with
margin-lights to No.45 and long 4/4 staircase sash to No.13,
all in plain reveals and with sills.
INTERIOR: No.45 retains original plasterwork including
cornices to some rooms, that to front ground floor has frieze,
cornice and ceiling rose; shutters; barrel vaulted cellars.
Otherwise not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Binswood Avenue was laid out c1828 and most
houses to the west were built by 1834. Nos 31-45 (odd)
Binswood Avenue (qqv) with No.13 Kenilworth Road (qv) form a
group. Occupies an important corner site.
