No.1 and attached railings

House, now offices and attached railings. 1836-1837. By
William Startin. Pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco
facade, Welsh slate roof and cast-iron railings and balcony.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with attic and basement, 3 first-floor
windows. Horizontal rustication to ground floor. First-floor
band interrupted by 10-pane French windows with margin-lights
and blind boxes. Second-floor band, 3/6 sashes. Cornice,
blocking course. Attic dormer. Ground floor: 3 steps to left
entrance a 6-panel door with overlight in panelled reveals;
surround of Doric pilasters, frieze with end triglyphs,
cornice.
Windows: 6/6 sashes in plain reveals and with sills. Basement
has late C20 casement windows. Raised gable end. End stacks.
Continuous balcony to first floor has balustrade with
heart-and-anthemion motif.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: railings across front and to sides of
steps have bars with double-oval and lance-head finials.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Clarendon Place was laid out in 1825.
Forms a continuous architectural group with Nos 7-10
(consecutive) Clarendon Square (qv).
