Terrace of 4 houses, now shops, offices and flats. c1822-1834
with later additions and alterations including mid-C20 ground
floors and shop fronts of Nos 19-23.
EXTERIOR: 5 storeys with attics, 8 first-floor windows.
Pinkish-brown brick with stucco facades, painted except to
left (No.17), Welsh slate and concealed roofs, and cast-iron
balcony. Paired Doric pilasters to ends and between houses
from first floor through second and third floors.
First floor: tall 6/9 sashes throughout; second floor: 6/6
sashes throughout with sills; blind boxes to both floors to
No.19. Third floor: 3/6 sashes with sills throughout. Windows
to first, second and third floors have plain reveals and
moulded surrounds. Frieze, cornice. Fourth floor: casement
windows with plain reveals throughout. Copings.
Ground floor: to left dwelling (No.17) a 4-panel door with
divided overlight at right side and tripartite window of three
1/1 sashes. Otherwise C20 alterations include horizontal
rustication to 2 dwellings to right (Nos 21 & 23).
Attics: dormer windows to left and to 2 right dwellings. Ridge
and end stacks to left, otherwise concealed. Roof hipped to
left. Continuous ornate cast-iron balcony to No.17.
Replacement balcony to Nos 21 & 23.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: originally known as The Promenade, Dormer
Place was laid out c1822 and built along by 1834.
