Formerly known as: Church of St Peter (Roman Catholic) GEORGE
STREET.
Roman Catholic Church of St Peter (until 1864), Boys' Club
premises and Mission Hall, disused at time of review. 1828. By
John Russell and Mitchell. Brownish-pink brick in English
bond. Painted stucco facades, Welsh slate roof.
STYLE: Greek Revival.
PLAN: nave, chancel and transepts, with further side range to
north.
EXTERIOR: entrance to west end, four 3/4 engaged giant Ionic
columns support frieze and pediment. Step to central entrance
a board door, plain reveals. Hood on corbel brackets supports
fielded plinth and round-arched niche with statue of St.
Peter. Moulded surround.
To south return a tall, 56-fixed-light window with
margin-lights, plain reveals, eared architrave, sills.
To south crossing (west side) a board door with hood on corbel
brackets; south side, giant Tuscan pilaster strips to ends
support frieze and pediment.
To north return a tall, 56-fixed-light window with
margin-lights, plain reveals, eared architrave, sills.
To north crossing (west side) a plank door with plain reveals
within surround of Doric pilasters, frieze, cornice, pediment.
To further north range a round-arched niche on continuous band
with inserted casement window.
This range abuts No.15, Ashton House (qv).
INTERIOR: cast-iron window frames have painted glass margin
lights. Apse with raised platform at east end has stained
glass rooflight in ceiling. Interior partially subdivided.
