Includes: No.5 REGENT STREET.
Terrace of 6 houses, now houses and flats. Numbered from right
to left, described from left to right. 1828-1834, with later
additions and alterations. Reddish-brown brick with painted
stucco facades and Welsh slate and concealed roofs.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, except No.40 which is 3 storeys, 16
first-floor windows arranged: 3:3:3:3:2:2.
Stucco detailing includes continuous first-floor band, ramped
upwards from left to right surmounted by Tuscan pilasters with
depressed panel between each window and to ends of each house,
capitals missing to No.38, and with continuous frieze and
cornice. No.40 has 3 Ionic pilasters to upper stage, frieze,
cornice. First floor has 6/6 sashes throughout except right
two (No.38) are 4/4 sashes. Left return (Regent Street) has
6/6 sash and blind opening. Second floor (No.40) has 3/6
sashes.
Ground floor, entrances: to left return, 2 steps to
deeply-recessed 4-panel door within Doric pilastered surround,
frieze, cornice. Otherwise, steps to central entrances to
three left houses: 6-panel doors, all with overlights and in
plain reveals, Nos. 46 and 44 with Doric pilastered surrounds,
frieze with triglyphs and cornice. Then left entrances to two
to right (Nos 40, 38): part-glazed, 4-panel doors, No.40 has
2-columnar Doric porch with engaged pilasters, frieze,
cornice, blocking course; No.38 has overlight and plain
reveals.
Windows, from left: unequally hung 2/2 sash, canted bay with
2/2 sash between 1/1 sashes; four 6/6 sashes, 2 canted bays
with 2/2 sash between 1/1 sashes; to left return (Regent
Street) are two 6/6 sashes. All window openings in plain
reveals and with sills. Low parapet with copings. Tall ridge
and roof stacks.
INTERIOR: No.42 Grove Street and No.5 Regent Street have
staircases with stick balusters.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Grove Street was laid out in 1828, the west
side and lower part of the east side were built by 1834.
Nos 14-46 (even) Grove Street and No.5 Regent Street (qqv)
form an architectural group.
