Purley House and attached railings
GV II
House now flats. 1828-1834, with later additions and
alterations. Pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco to front
and right facades, Welsh slate roof and cast-iron balcony and
railings.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with basement, 2 first-floor windows, with
deeply-recessed, single-storey entrance range to right. First
floor has tall 6/9 sashes. Second floor has 3/6 sashes, sills.
Ground floor has 3/6 sashes, sills. All windows have plain
reveals.
Entrance: 3 roll-edged steps to part-glazed, 5-panel door with
overlight with glazing bars and tent hood.
Basement has central part-glazed door between casement window
and 8/2 sash. To first floor a continuous balcony with
double-heart-and-anthemion motif balustrade.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: area railings and gate have anthemion
finials.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Grove Street was laid out in 1828, the west
side and lower part of the east side were built by 1834.
Forms an architectural group with No.48 Grove Street and No.6
Regent Street (qqv).
