Terrace of 12 houses, now offices and attached railings.
Numbered right to left, described left to right. Laid out and
built 1833-1834. Mr Swain built some portion of it.
Pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco facades and mainly
Welsh slate roofs, that to left has cement-tiles, with
cast-iron railings and balconies.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, 24 first-floor windows, of which bays
3-6, 11-14, and 19-22 project. Complete terrace with
symmetrical, Neo-classical design. Ground floor has horizontal
rustication. First floor: tall unequally-hung 1/1 sashes
except to No.28 are 6/4 sashes, all within tooled architraves
with frieze and cornice, except centre four windows with
pediments. Second floor: 1/1 sashes except to No.28 are 6/6
sashes, all with tooled architraves and sills. Stepped
cornice, low parapet with balusters to centre surmounted by 4
anthemions and pedimented to centre two bays. Ground floor:
end entrances, otherwise in pairs all within porches (partly
missing to No.32), the outer and central two bays with Tuscan
pilasters, otherwise with round-arched openings; part-glazed
doors, those in Tuscan porches with overlights with glazing
bars, otherwise with fanlights mainly with decorative glazing.
Tripartite 1/1 sashes except to No.28 a 6/6 between 4/4 sash
and to No.10 a single 1/1 sash.
Basements: plank doors and mainly 6/6 sashes, some 2/2 and 1/1
sashes and multi-pane casements. Ridge stacks.
First floor has continuous balcony with double-rod motif on
ornamental brackets, except to left dwelling are similar
balconettes.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: lancet area railings throughout.
Nos 10-38 (even) form a group with No.2 (Grove House) Newbold
Street and No.40 Holly Walk (qqv).
