Fountain. Erected 1869. Designed by John Cundall. Millstone
grit and red polished granite with sandstone ashlar and Coade
stone dressings. Gothic Revival Early English style. Circular
basin with low walls with cavetto moulding and roll-edged
copings. Fountain base a quatrefoil with imposed square on
plan, stepped. Then tooled plinths with pilasters with foliate
caps to angles surmounted by pyramidal caps. From these flying
buttresses abut centre, with base square on plan surmounted by
cylindrical shaft, then further plinth square on plan
surrounded by 4 columns with elaborate foliate capitals
supporting quatrefoil basin with acroteria. 4 banded column
clusters support smaller quatrefoil basin surmounted by
pinnacle with finials. Inscribed: 'IN MEMORY OF JOHN HITCHMAN
WHO DIED ... 1867'.
