Gate lodge. 1846 with later additions and alterations. By
David Squirhill. Brick with painted stucco facades and Welsh
slate roof. Italianate style.
EXTERIOR: single storey, single bay with extensions to east
and south, originally square on plan with projecting bays.
Moulded plinth, band, rusticated band surmounted by rusticated
quoins to angles.
Entrance to north side in solid projecting porch, part-glazed
door with blind overlight with tooled round-arch with mask
keystone and continuous impost band, segmental pediment.
To returns of porch are round-arched 1/1 sashes with moulded
sills. To either side are narrow 1/1 sashes with rusticated
jambs and arch with keystone.
To west facade a projecting, solid bay with central 1/1 sash
with overlight, with tooled arch with keystone and continuous
impost band, to returns are narrow 1/1 sashes. To either side
are 1/1 round-arched sashes with tooled arch, all with moulded
sills. C-scroll frieze, modillion cornice supports wide eaves.
Hipped roof, 2 tall rear stacks with cornices.
Rear extension has bow window, with three 6-pane windows
curved on section, and with pilasters between, with frieze and
egg-and-dart cornice, on base with horizontal rustication;
modillion cornice supports wide eaves.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the Gardens were established in 1836 as a
covenanted space, and laid out and planted in 1846-1848 when
they were renamed after Dr Henry Jephson, a local medical
practitioner of considerable repute.
Forms an almost symmetrical pair with West Lodge (North) (qv).
