Villa with attached wall and railings. c1834-1838. Architect,
William Thomas. Pinkish-brown brick with unpainted stucco,
partly painted to ground floor, right side, with Welsh slate
roof and cast-iron railings, porch, verandah and basement
cover.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with basement and attic, 2 first-floor
windows. Plinth. 6 roll-edged steps to central entrance a
3-panel door. Canted bay from basement to ground floor to left
with 2/2 sash between 1/1 sashes to ground floor and 1/1
sashes to basement. Otherwise 8/8 sashes throughout with plain
reveals and sills. Low parapets, copings. Half-hipped roof.
Right return has 2 first-floor windows. Ground floor has tall
8/12 sashes, first floor has 8/8 sashes with plain reveals.
Basement has 18-pane fixed lights. Porch has circle-and-scroll
motif.
Right return has verandah to ground floor with
double-rod-with-anthemion-and-paterae motif to balustrade and
diamond-circle-and-oval uprights. Basement to right return has
scrolled cover.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: screen wall to right abuts No.2 (qv). To
sides of entrance steps are railings with stick railings.
HISTORICAL NOTE: a map of Leamington Spa in 1834 shows
Lansdowne Circus and Crescent laid out for 'intended
buildings'. Lansdowne Circus is an almost complete layout of
practically identical villas.
Nos 1-17 (consecutive), Lansdowne Circus form an architectural
group with Victoria House, and Nos 19-57 (odd), Lansdowne
Crescent (qqv), all by Thomas.
