GV II*

Pair of semi-detached villas and attached walls. c1834-1838.
Architect, William Thomas. Pinkish-brown brick with painted
stucco facade and Welsh slate roof with cast-iron porches and
verandahs.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with basement and attics to gables, 6
first-floor windows, the outer bays are recessed. End
entrances: 7 steps to 3-panel doors. 10-pane French windows
with margin lights. First floor has narrow, round-arched 2/2
sashes to outer bays, otherwise 6/6 sashes with plain reveals
and sills. Basement has multi-pane casement windows. Frieze,
cornice and low parapet. Central ridge and rear stacks.
Porches have delicate scroll motif. Ground floor centre bays
have continuous verandah with heart-and-anthemion motif
balustrade and diamond, circle and oval motifs to uprights.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: screen walls abut No.1 to left (qv) and
No.4 to right (qv) with openings to garden.
HISTORICAL NOTE: a map of 1834 shows Lansdowne Circus and
Crescent laid out for 'intended building'. Lansdowne Circus is
an almost complete layout of practically identical villas. Nos
1-17 (consecutive) Lansdowne Circus form an architectural
group with Victoria House, and Nos 19-57 (odd) Lansdowne
Crescent (qqv), all by William Thomas.
