GV II*

Pair of semi-detached villas and attached walls. c1834-1838
with later alterations. Architect, William Thomas.
Pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco facade and Welsh slate
roof with cast-iron porches and verandahs.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with basement and attics to gable, 6
first-floor windows, of which the entrance bays to left and
right are set back. First floor: to left and right a narrow,
round-arched 2/2 sash, otherwise 6/6 sashes in plain reveals
and with sills, windows to right have blind boxes. Entrances:
5 steps to 3-panel doors, that to left part-glazed. 10-pane
French windows with margin-lights. Casement window to
basement. Frieze, cornice, low parapet. Central ridge and rear
stacks. Porches have delicate scroll motifs. Continuous
verandah to centre of ground floor has heart-and-anthemion
balustrade and uprights with anthemion-and-paterae motifs.
INTERIOR to No.11 has staircase with wreathed handrail and
rod-with-central-bobbin balusters; shutters to some windows;
fireplaces.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: screen walls to left and right abut Nos 9
and 12.
HISTORICAL NOTE: No.10 was the home of American author,
Nathaniel Hawthorne, c1853-1859. A map of 1834 shows Lansdowne
Circus and Crescent laid out for 'intended buildings'.
Lansdowne Circus is an almost complete layout of practically
identical villas. Nos 1-17 (consecutive), Lansdowne Circus
form an architectural group with Victoria House, and Nos
19-57, Lansdowne Crescent (qqv), all by William Thomas.
