Pair of semi-detached villas and attached walls. c1834-1836
with later alterations. Architect, William Thomas.
Pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco facade and Welsh slate
roof with cast-iron porch and verandah.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with basement and attics to gable, 6
first-floor windows of which the entrance bays to left and
right are set back. First floor: to left and right a narrow,
round-arched 2/2 sashes, otherwise 6/6 sashes, in plain
reveals and with sills. Entrances: 6 steps to 3-panel,
part-glazed doors. Two 4-pane French windows; two 10-pane
French windows with margin-lights all with blind boxes.
Basement has 8/8 replacement sashes to left, casements to
right. Frieze, cornice, low parapet; central ridge and rear
stacks. Porches have diamond and oval motifs to uprights.
Continuous verandah to centre, ground floor has
heart-and-anthemion motif to balustrade, and circle, oval and
diamond motifs to uprights.
INTERIOR: both have staircases with wreathed handrails and
rod-with-central-bobbin balusters; some fireplaces; shutters
to some windows.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: screen walls to right and left abut Nos
11 and 14 (qqv).
HISTORICAL NOTE: a map of 1938 shows Lansdowne Circus and
Crescent laid out for 'intended buildings'.
Lansdowne Circus is an almost complete layout of practically
identical villas. Nos. 1-17 (consecutive), Lansdowne Circus
form an architectural group with Victoria House, and Nos
19-57, Lansdowne Crescent (qqv), all by William Thomas.
