Parochial rooms and house. c1870-80 with later additions and
alterations. Probably by John Cundall. Reddish-brown brick
with ashlar dressings and plain tile roof. Jacobean style.
Irregular plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 4 first-floor windows, 2 to left in
taller, wider range, then single-bay lower range and
gable-ended bay, and with range to rear. Chamfered plinth.
Buttresses to ends to ground floor. 2 entrances below 3rd.
window: pair of ogeed arches with 3 steps to plank doors
within hollow-chamfered surrounds. To left are 2 pairs of
casement windows with cambered-arched heads in
hollow-chamfered surrounds and with ogee-arched hoodmoulds and
chamfered sills. To right a rectangular bay with 3-light
mullion and transom windows.
First floor: to left range a continuous chamfered sill band
and pair of 2-light windows with plate tracery to heads and
projecting double gable. Then a mullion window with casements
in gable. The 2-light mullion and transom window with
casements under hoodmould. Copings to gables. Tall star-shaped
ridged stack and grouped right end stacks. Above entrance a
plaque inscribed: 'SAINT PAUL'S / PAROCHIAL ROOMS / & CHURCH
HOUSE.' Single tall-storey room to rear has 3 pairs of
multi-pane casement windows under cambered heads. Pair of
lancet windows to rear, now blocked.
INTERIOR: retains some fireplaces; rear room has pilasters
supporting roof beams. Staircase has turned balusters.
HISTORICAL NOTE: John Cundall was architect of the adjacent
Church of St Paul (qv) and of the Town Hall, Parade (qv).
Forms an interesting architectural group with Church of St
Paul (qv).
