GV II

Houses, now shops with flats above. Numbered right to left,
described left to right. c1808-1818 with later additions and
alterations including mid-late C20 ground floor and shop
fronts. Pinkish-brown brick stacks with painted stucco facade
and concealed roof.
4 storeys, 4 first floor windows, arranged 2:2. First floor
has tall 6/6 sashes; second-floor sill band, 6/6 sashes; third
floor has 3/3 sashes, sills; all in plain reveals. Frieze,
cornice, blocking course. Tall ridge and end stacks.
INTERIOR: No.144A has dogleg staircase with stick balusters
from ground to third floor. 4-panel doors; cast-iron and
wooden fireplaces.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the Parade was so-named in 1860. Originally
called Lillington Lane, it was renamed Union Row c1809. The
lower section was laid out c1810-1814 and extended towards
Dormer Place, c1835. Built as houses, hotels and
lodging-houses, by 1850 many had become shops. The original
buildings were brick fronted.
