Pair of houses, now flats. c1824-1828, with later alterations
including conversion of c1984. Pinkish-brown brick with
painted stucco to front facade, concealed roof, cast-iron
railings and brass hardware.
2 storeys with basement, attics to rear, 6 first-floor window
range, 3 to each house. 3 full-height fluted Corinthian
pilasters. Windows, ground and first floor, 6/6 sashes in
eared architraves. Ground floor: 4 steps to central entrances
(alike), 4-panel doors with overlights with glazing bars,
eared architraves, continuous cornice on enriched console
brackets. Doors have lion-and-wreath knockers. Basements have
central entrances, late-C20 part-glazed doors, 3/9 sashes.
Frieze, dentil cornice and wide pediment over the whole
facade. To rear: each house has curved bow to full height with
mainly 6/6 sashes.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: railings to sides of steps and across
front facade, with gate to basement.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Portland Place was laid out in 1823-4.
Nos 4-14 (even) Portland Place and Nos 52 and 54 Grove Street
(qqv) constitute an architectural group.
