GV II
Villa, now club and attached railings. c1824-1836 with
mid-late C20 additions and alterations including attics and
entrance bay to right. Pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco
facades, cement-tile roof and cast-iron railings and balcony.
2 storeys with attic and basement, 3 first-floor windows.
First floor: moulded band surmounted by Doric pilasters
between windows and to ends; 2/2 sashes. Frieze, cornice, low
parapet. Flight of 5 steps to central entrance a part-glazed
door with fanlight within distyle Doric porch with
entablature. Bow windows to outer bays through basement and
ground floors; ground floor, each with two 6/6 sashes. First
floor has continuous circle-motif balustrade across tops of
bows and porch.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: area railings and gate and to sides of
porch have bars with paterae and anthemion finials.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Portland Street was laid out in 1823-4.
Nos 2-8 (even) Portland Street (qqv) form an architectural
group.
