Terrace of houses, now shops and flats. c1810-1830 with later
additions and alterations including mid-late C20 ground-floor
shop fronts. Reddish-brown brick with painted stucco to right
(No.61), painted brick to Nos 55, 57 and 59, and Welsh slate
roofs, except Nos 49-55 have cement tiles.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, 21 first-floor windows. first floor has
(from left) two 6/1 sashes; five 6/6 sashes; two 1/1 sashes;
six 6/6 sashes; three tall 1/1 sashes; three 6/6 sashes.
Second floor: 3/3 sash; blind opening; seven 3/3 sashes;
single-pane casement; eleven 3/3 sashes. All openings in plain
reveals and with sills and flat channelled arches with raised
keystones.
Ground floor: to No.39A: steps to 6 fielded-panel door with
fanlight with radial glazing bars, imposts and moulded arch
with keystone; to right (No.42 Bedford Street) 2 roll-edged
steps to similar entrance, otherwise mainly C20 glazed shop
fronts.
Ridge stacks with cornices. Roof hipped to right. Right
return: 3 window range, first floor has three 6/6 sashes;
second floor has two 3/3 sashes and 3/6 sash. Ground floor has
C20 shop fronts.
INTERIOR: noted as retaining original plasterwork and joinery,
Nos 41 and 43 have central dog-leg staircase through first and
second floors has stick balusters; otherwise not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Regent Street, originally known as Cross
Street until the visit of Prince Regent in 1819, was among the
first of the 'New Town' streets to be laid out c1808-1808.
They were originally built as houses and had brick facades.
Forms a group with No.35 Regent Street (qv).
