12 almshouses. 1795 and 1859, restored c1975. Nos 4-9 were
built in 1795 by Dorothy and Philadelphia Percy, daughters of
the Duke of Northumberland, to provide for 6 poor widows of
the Church of England; Nos 1-3 at the north end, and probably
also Nos 10-12 at the south, were added in 1859 by the
Reverend Henry Wagner and his sister Mary in memory of the
Marquis of Bristol; restored 1975-6 when, presumably, the
considerable additions at the rear were made. Yellow brick set
in Flemish bond, roof of slate.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 2 windows each, except for the central
house which share a central window. The front advances and
recedes in a rhythm of 4-2-3-5-3-2-4. Pointed-arched
entrances, now no longer used as such, those to the centre
paired under an ogee arch and brick hoodmould; pointed-arched
windows with sashes of original design in which the upper sash
has pointed-arched glazing bars. Inscription over central bay:
'THESE ALMSHOUSES were erected and endowed at the request of
the late PHILADELPHIA and DOROTHY PERCY AD 1795'; plaque
between ground and first floor on No.3 '1859/In pious
remembrance of/The Marquis of Bristol/ M.A.W. and H.M.W.';
